How to Reset a Skoda Key

Just got a message from my infotainment device to inform me that the battery for my key is low and needs replacing. This isn't the first time, and the last time I visited an auto dealer, they replaced the battery for free in two minutes and said it will work again.

Switch the ignition ON and lock the vehicle mechanically. Press the unlock button five times in intervals of 1 second on the remote control. A short horn tone will sound.

EEPROM Method

If your car's key stops working, it may take an extended time for a professional technician to reprogram it. In most cases, the EEPROM is scanned to determine the unique code of the car. This is a risky process, and there's a high chance of corrupting the information within the module. It is best to leave this to a skilled locksmith.

An EEPROM (non-volatile) memory is used in a wide variety of electronic devices, including car keys. It stores data that includes the unique authentication codes as well as encryption keys that your car recognizes when you use it to unlock the vehicle or start it. These codes are crucial because they inform the car that you have the right key and are authorized to drive it.

If your EEPROM is damaged, the keys will not work. The problem is caused by pressing the wrong button or accidentally hitting the wrong key. It is possible to reset the key by using an instrument that is specifically designed for this purpose. However this method might not work. It is recommended to hire a professional with extensive experience programming automotive keys.

To reset your EEPROM, you must remove the Kessy Module from the vehicle. It is located above the accelerator pedal on the left side of the vehicle. With a screwdriver, remove the single plastic clip holding it in place. Then, disconnect the electrical connectors. Take it out. You can then read the EEPROM using a SOIC8 or micro pincers attached to the programmer. Once you have all the information, you can save the file and then write it back into the EEPROM.

To read the EEPROM data, utilize a program like PonyProg and click Read Device. The EEPROM dump will show up as a hex array of characters. There are three values in hex: the KEY_CODE, the key_count, and the V_ARG_ENABLED. To "virginize" the chip, you must change all other hex values starting with the number 00. Once you do this, you can flash the chip to restore its functionality.

Ignition Method

This method uses a second working key to activate the car's system. It isn't applicable to all cars however it will be able to reset the key fob in case it's not working properly or the battery is dead. It should also work if the buttons have been hit hard (a common cause of this is when people try to push down the unlock button a few times).

This method requires you to switch on the ignition and keep it turned on. Then, lock the door to the driver's compartment with another key. Then, place the key fob in the lock position and point it towards the transmitter on the front side of the vehicle, above the mirror. Hold the unlock button down for a few seconds. The horn will sound and the key fob will start working.

If the  skoda keys  fail to work it could be because the transmitter inside has been damaged or is not in alignment with the vehicle's security system. This will require changing the program. A technician or automotive locksmith can assist you in this.

If the key fob is not working after reprogramming it, you could be able to determine that the car has "forgotten" the key (if the car hasn't been used in six months). This should still allow you to test a resync option in the user's manual. remove the door lock for the driver's cap and lock, then unlock the car with that key. If it doesn't work, you will need to visit the dealer. This is usually done on keys that have lost their function, and it takes less than two minutes to complete.

Keyless Entry Method

The new generation of keyless entry systems - the kind supplied with modern OCTAVIA as well as electric ENYAQ iV cars - features an innovative security feature that stops thieves from "signal extension". The car transmits an alarm and the key must respond within a set time. If the key isn't responsive, the car cannot be locked. The car will begin to ring alarms.

A sensor on the door's handle can also be used to inform the car that the key is nearby. It transmits an electrical signal to the internal coil inside the key, which sends a signal back to the sensor. If the sensor detects it, the car will unlock itself and activate the interior lights automatically if configured to do so.

Even older keyless entry systems come with an alternative. If the remote does not work, you can open the door of the driver mechanically, either by sliding out the blade or, in some models, by pushing down on a button in the door pocket. This method is particularly helpful in the event that your key's battery is dead or you've lost it.

Remote Control Method

If you've just bought an electronic remote control but it isn't working in your vehicle it could be because the seller didn't have programmed it to match your vehicle. It could also be because the terminals of the battery are loose (look for this, they could appear a bit loose to the touch and may be soldered in the wrong place) - carefully soldering them back in place will bring your key fob back to full working order. If you're not confident with this type of repair, seek out a professional auto elec technician.

Switch ignition OFF, and then lock the vehicle from inside with a second key that is not matched (this will reset the memory position 1). Enter channel "01" (may be channel "21" in certain Audi models). Insert the new key fob into the door to the driver's side and then press its unlock button twice in 5 minutes (often enough to reach the next available memory position).

Repeat this process for up to 4 additional remote controls. Make sure to turn off the ignition before programming each remote. You should hear a chime each time you successfully code the remote.
